Jake Volunteer Spotlight

Meet CASA Volunteer Jake!

Jake is a dedicated individual whose passion for child welfare is evident in both his personal and professional life. In his family life, Jake shares a home with his wonderful fiancée Valerie and their three cats, Missy, Junebug, and Cirrilla. On the professional front, he currently works as a freelance sculptor, specializing in crafting scale model animals licensed to toy companies or self-marketed. Despite his success in the world of sculpting, Jake aspires to transition into a full-time role within child welfare.

Jake’s diverse set of hobbies reflects his creative and nurturing nature. He is an avid sculptor and painter, engages in stamp making, and enjoys various crafts such as cooking, baking, and canning. In his free time, he dedicates himself to sculpting, painting, and showcasing model horses, competing for prizes. This passion for creativity extends beyond his artistic pursuits, as Jake has found a meaningful outlet for his compassion in his role as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).

Jake’s journey with CASA began after learning about the organization from a former volunteer turned foster mom on Instagram. Motivated by his desire to make a positive impact on the lives of children within his means, Jake decided to become a CASA volunteer. His decision is deeply rooted in his own challenging childhood experiences, having escaped abuse at the age of 17. Jake recognizes the transformative power of having adults who listen and advocate for vulnerable children.

In his role as a CASA volunteer, Jake has served on two cases, garnering praise from team members for his invaluable contributions. On one case involving a teenager, the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) noted Jake’s exceptional ability to connect with the child, helping them emerge from their shell in unprecedented ways. In another case, focused on a young child, the Juvenile Officer Supervisor commended Jake for his excellent support in encouraging biological parents and advocating for their needs to become the best parents for their child.

Jake’s commitment to being a voice for children in the foster care system is evident in his efforts to ensure effective communication and collaboration within the team. He recognizes the importance of addressing legal gaps to meet the diverse needs of these children, showcasing his dedication to providing comprehensive advocacy.

For those considering becoming a CASA, Jake offers insightful advice rooted in personal experience. He emphasizes the significance of consulting with individuals who have experienced the foster care system, both as children and as parents. This nuanced perspective, Jake believes, is crucial for understanding the unique needs and challenges faced by those involved in the system. Furthermore, he encourages volunteers not to shy away from working with older teens, as they require essential support during their transition to adulthood.

In summary, Jake’s journey as a CASA reflects his deep empathy, creative spirit, and unwavering dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of children and families in the foster care system.
