Meet CASA Volunteer, Denis!
After 37 years in Huntsville, Denis Bergquist and his wife relocated to Nixa to be closer to their first grandchild in Springfield. A retired electrical and systems engineer, Denis spent his career working on NASA’s SpaceLab and on advanced U.S. Army Air and Missile Defense programs—so yes, he really was a rocket scientist.
Now retired, Denis fills his time with reading (often a book or two a week), vegetable gardening, and traveling with his wife. After a presentation by CASA’s Development Director, he felt called to put his experience and steady presence to work in a new way—advocating for children in foster care.
Though still on his first case, Denis has already made a meaningful impact. Through careful case review and proactive communication with educators, he helped ensure a child received expanded school services and greater stability. His recommendation to maintain school placement was thoughtfully considered by the court, contributing to a decision that prioritized consistency for the children involved.
Denis believes strongly in the power of showing up. He encourages anyone considering becoming a CASA volunteer to take the step, noting that the training and support are strong—and that even a small investment of time can help change a child’s trajectory. For Denis, the hugs from the boys he serves are proof that advocacy makes a difference.
