CASA Spotlight

Mary McMillan

Meet CASA Volunteer Mary!

This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight one of our incredible CASA volunteers, Mary McMillen, whose journey to becoming an advocate is as inspiring as her dedication to the children she serves.

Mary is a proud and blessed mom of two (mostly) grown kids, two dogs, and three cats. Her daughter, 28, is a talented nail artist and the proud owner of her own business. Her son, 21, will graduate this spring from OTC’s Electrical Lineman program. And then there’s her 8-year-old “grand princess,” who is the light of [Name]’s life and, by her own admission, just a little spoiled. OK, maybe more than a little!

Beyond her family, Mary enjoys pursuing personal challenges and hobbies. About a year ago, she learned to make sourdough bread—a hobby she loves not only for the delicious results but also for the stress relief of “slinging dough around.” Recently, she returned to the gym after a 3.5-year hiatus and has been enjoying circuit training workouts, finding motivation in the progress she’s made.

Mary first learned about CASA over 20 years ago through radio commercials. The idea of being a positive influence for children during some of their most challenging times resonated deeply with her. Though she couldn’t commit at the time—her own children were just 8 and 1—she made a promise to herself: once her kids were old enough to understand the work she’d be doing, she would sign up to be a CASA. Fast forward to 2014/2015, and she fulfilled that promise.

Her advice to anyone considering becoming a CASA? “Just do it and think about it later. You can always change your mind. What you can’t change is that a child needs someone like you to be their voice.”

Mary, thank you for your commitment to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children. Your passion and dedication are an inspiration to us all!
